Rubric for grading dissertations

Quotations are integrated well into sentences. The author's choice of words are somewhat effective; over-used words and cliches are dominant. Examples support thesis and fit within paragraph. Some evidence does not support point or may appear where inappropriate. Word choice is mostly effective. Huge problems in sentence structure and grammar. May also contain logical contradictions. More than one grammar error exists in the statement.

Unclear contains vague termsappears unoriginal, or offers relatively little that is new; provides little around which to structure the paper. Excellent integration of quoted material into sentences.

Dissertation research grading rubric

Correct word usage, punctuation, sentence structure, and grammar; correct citation of sources; minimal to no spelling errors; absolutely no run-on sentences or comma splices. Easily identifiable, plausible, novel, sophisticated, insightful, crystal clear. Has no identifiable thesis or an utterly incompetent thesis. Unclear, often because thesis is weak or non-existent. Ideas do not flow at all, usually because there is no argument to support. The statement is broken up into multiple sentences and says too much or not enough. May also contain logical contradictions. Simplistic view of topic, and there is no effort to grasp possible alternative views. Few topic sentences. Examples support thesis and fit within paragraph. Unclear, often because thesis is weak or non-existent. Wording The author uses appropriate words. Length The statement is to the point; the author does not add more than is necessary. Logic may often fail, or the argument may often be unclear. No attempt has been made to incorporate factual information or interpret primary and secondary sources. The statement is hard to understand as a result of grammar errors. May not address counter-arguments or make any connections with the thesis. Easily identifiable, plausible, novel, sophisticated, insightful, crystal clear. The statement says all it needs to, with a few extra, unnecessary clauses.
